Bill 208 Needs a Public Record Before a Private Push

AACV says the committee pause should produce a public evidence record, not another quiet push against adult access.

The file is still in committee

the official Bill 208 page lists the sponsor as Petrovic, shows first reading on April 16, second reading referral on April 20, and lists no amendments. the Economic Future committee page also says submissions are closed and no meetings are currently scheduled.

A fair adult-access process needs proof

  • What evidence shows legal adult channels are the problem?
  • What evidence shows minors are buying from licensed stores rather than informal sellers?
  • What evidence shows a flavour ban would reduce youth access without expanding illegal supply?
  • What amendments would protect legal adult switching and existing enforcement tools?

Alberta already has tools to enforce the line

Alberta rules and enforcement already covers the 18+ age rule, photo-ID checks for anyone who appears under 25, restrictions on display and promotion, location limits, and fines. A serious Bill 208 review should start with whether those tools are being used and reported.
